Definition side job

A part-time job is a professional activity that is often carried out alongside studies or a main job for a maximum of between 20 and 30 hours per week. In principle, every German can have any number of jobs as a flexible part-time job. The 450-euro jobs as flexible mini-jobs also fall under this principle. But be careful: The total income of all minor jobs must not exceed the limit of 450 euros per month. Only if this is the case, the reputable part-time jobs remain exempt from insurance for the employee and are not entered on the wage tax card as an additional income. This is how you can earn money quickly with a weekend job and without risk.

First steps towards a flexible part-time job

But can everyone really do a part-time job? What if you are already employed? So: If you don't have a permanent employment contract, you can immediately look for a part-time job and improve your income. But employees can also take advantage of this opportunity and find a flexible part-time job. Many ask themselves whether the bosscan forbid this part-time job or weekend job. But that is not the case. The boss cannot dictate what an employee does in their free time after work. Many employment or collective agreements require that you inform your employer about a part-time job. However, the boss cannot forbid the employee to take on serious part-time jobs, even if the provision for additional income and a flexible mini-job is in the employment contract.

Taxes for flexible part-time jobs

Yes, you shouldn't ignore the tiresome topic of taxes when looking for part-time jobs. In general, a 450 euro part-time job is not subject to tax. Anyone who exceeds this amount must declare the part-time job in their tax return . However, there is a chance to get the taxes back after filing the tax return. This happens, for example, if the taxable portion is below the annual basic tax allowance of the flexible part-time job. This is currently 9,984 euros.

How many part-time jobs can you do?

Anyone who starts a part-time job and wants to earn even more money often wonders how many part-time jobs are generally allowed. It is important to look at the income from an additional income. Because those who do not have a main job that is subject to social insurance contributions are generally allowed to have more than one part-time job if the total salary of these mini-jobs does not exceed the 450 euro limit per month. This means that theoretically five part-time jobs or more are legally permitted, but the probability is of course low that the 450 euro limit will not be exceeded.

Working hours for a part-time job

When it comes to working hours for a part-time job, there is a requirement in the so-called Working Hours Act. There it says for a side income when looking for a part-time job as follows:

“The daily working time of employees must not exceed eight hours. It can only be extended to up to ten hours if an average of eight hours per working day is not exceeded within six calendar months or within 24 weeks.

Translated this means for a serious part-time job:

  • a maximum of 48 hours per week are permitted as working time for additional income

  • whoever increases the hours per day can use a weekly working time of up to 60 hours if the weekly working time can be balanced out to an average of 48 hours within six months

So if you have a full-time job five days a week, you can still work a part-time job eight hours a week and earn money quickly without risk. It is possible to extend the maximum daily working time to ten hours for a part-time job if the break and rest times are observed.

Students with student loans and serious part-time jobs

If you want to take on a part-time job as a student , you can work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the semester. This regulation applies so that your studies continue to come first. Only then are students still entitled to Bafög and receive child benefit. Anyone who receives student loans should not earn more than 5,400 euros a year, otherwise the student loan will be reduced accordingly. The annual basic tax allowance is also important for students and is currently 9,408 euros. Anyone who stays below does not have to pay any taxes for these serious part-time jobs or the weekend job. Anyone who earns more than 450 euros a month as a student must pay into the pension insurance and register for a flexible mini-job with health insurance themselvesSign in.

Unemployed people with a part-time job – that applies to flexible mini-jobs

Unemployed people can also take on part-time jobs. However, they have to report these serious part-time jobs to the employment agency before starting and are not allowed to work more than 14 hours a week. According to the Social Security Code, after 15 hours they are no longer considered unemployed and are therefore not entitled to unemployment benefits. There is also the following difference between ALG 1 and ALG 2 recipients when looking for a part-time job:

  • ALG-1 recipients: If the net income is more than 165 euros per month, the employment office will deduct the excess amount as additional income from the unemployment benefit.

  • ALG-2 recipients: The first 100 euros are not counted. 20 percent of gross income between 100 and 1,000 euros per month is exempt, and 10 percent of monthly part-time income between 1,000 and 1,200 euros.

Student with a part-time job

Pupils are not allowed to earn more than 450 euros per month with a part-time job and are therefore also exempt from taxes. In general, however, a part-time job is only permitted from the age of 13, whereby the following conditions apply when looking for a part-time job:

  • only light jobs are possible with the serious part-time jobs

  • the working time may not exceed two hours per day for the additional income

  • working  hours  must be between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m

Once students turn 15, they can also take part-time jobs for up to eight hours a day. However, up to the age of 18 this is only allowed between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.
